It’s been said that you don’t get to choose your physical family, but you do get to choose your spiritual family.
Several from the Fairlane family got to go to the City of Children in Mexico this summer. And while we were there, we got to spend sometime with Jorge, the child we sponsor shown below. Jorge doesn’t have contact with his physical family outside of the walls of the City of Children. He and his sisters are there together, along with the other 50+ children. Jorge turned 14 on July 2, and has very much found a family at the children’s home there in Mexico.
There is an old song by Watershed Worship, an a-cappella group, called “City of Children.” Here are the lyrics of that song…
“Bienvenidos friend, this is where I’m from.
Just a few miles south, the place that I called home.
Where we fought off hunger daily from a box with driftwood sides. Now I found a house of living hope and a well that gives me life.
May the words you speak and not a coin or note. Be the bread you give to feed a hungry soul. Cause the beauty about love is it’s everywhere I go. It’s the same in any language, so I’m richer than you know.
Bienvenidos friend, this is where I’m from.
Just a few miles south of the place that you call home.
And though I don’t share your language, we share a greater truth. ‘Cause if you belong to Jesus then you belong here, too!
We all live in the city of children and we all look the same. You’ll find your place in the welcoming faces.
And all you’ve lost you’ll gain. In the city of children.”
Our relationship with Jesus Christ overcomes any dividing factor: ethnicity, race, language barriers, political opinions, personal choices, sin struggles, the lifestyle that we choose to live out, and so much more.
Jorge is learning about Jesus, daily. Over 20 groups come and go in a year’s time at the City of Children. Each group shares the Gospel message in their own way with the children and staff there. But Jorge hasn’t gotten to the point of believing that leads to choosing to be obedient to the call of Jesus and be baptized. We want to continue to pray for that and encourage him in his journey; not just leading up to that point but everyday following it as well.
So, over the next several weeks starting today, we will be putting together a “Family Tree” including all of our students in the FYM. Abby Ramirez, an FYM Junior, will be taking photos of our students on Sunday mornings in August so that we can include a current photo. We would also like to include their birthday, fun facts, likes, hobbies, and interests, and most importantly if they have chosen to be obedient and be baptized.
We want to complete this and send it to Jorge for Christmas this year. We hope that it will be something that encourages him as he looks through it. We hope that it will remind him that he can choose to be a part of God’s family, the greatest choice he will ever make! And we hope that by Fairlane choosing to allow Jorge to be a part of our family here through our sponsorship program, that our encouragement will be meaningful and inspirational to him.
