That’s a lot of zeroes. As I write this, there is $1.5 billion of Powerball winnings that has not been claimed in South Carolina. This is unusual. Even when a winner delays collecting their winnings, it doesn’t take this long to come forward. Even if a winner consults a financial advisor, attorney and immediate friends and family, they typically have identified and collected their winnings by now.
This has led to speculation that the winner has no idea that they have won. Maybe the winning ticket is in a kitchen drawer. Maybe its lying on the bottom of someone’s truck or car floorboard. Maybe it’s hanging on someone’s fridge covered up by other bits of information or photos. Maybe it was thrown away by accident and is rotting in a landfill. Maybe it’s tucked in someone’s wallet or purse and the winner has forgotten to check it. Maybe it’s lying on a sidewalk or gutter somewhere waiting to be found by a fortunate passerby,
It’s difficult to fathom losing such a reward due to carelessness or apathy. $1.5 billion would change any life. Imagine what you would do with such a windfall! Imagine what you could do in God’s Kingdom with such a blessing. You could change the life of your family, church, community and the less fortunate around you with such a blessing. Lives change with that much money present.
$1.5 billion would change everything for someone. Yet, how many of our friends and family walk around each day without claiming the greatest treasure of all. They go throughout their days walking right past the greatest blessing they could ever receive. They ignore riches that would change their lives now and for eternity. They refuse to grasp a gift that has been extended to them that could change the lives of their family, friends and community.
The gift of grace offered by God, through His son Jesus Christ, is the greatest gift you can ever receive. No other gift tops it. It blesses you in immense ways. It provides peace, joy, and an unconditional love that never leaves you. It also guarantees your citizenship in the Kingdom of God. It’s a citizenship that assures your eternity in the presence of God and with all of those who have confessed His Son as Savior. It is the greatest treasure you will ever hold.
Sadly, many of our family, friends and neighbors have overlooked this treasure. Either through ignorance, apathy or a willful resistance to the Gospel, they have rejected this great gift. They have turned away a treasure on which no manmade value can be placed.
So, we must continue to point them to this treasure. Through the things we say and the things we do, we must reveal to them a Father who loves them more than they know. We must continue to encourage them to accept the greatest gift ever offered them. We will continue to direct them to the greatest treasure they can hold.
$1.5 billion is a lot of money. Salvation and a relationship with Christ are worth more. Its value can’t be compared. Let’s continue to share the availability of this gift with those we love and meet in our lives. Let us all claim and enjoy the greatest treasure ever given.
