My Apple Watch sent me a report this past week that stated that I had walked 175 miles during the month of June. (This is a little more than the distance to Birmingham, AL which is approximately 158 miles.) I don’t remember walking this distance. Of course, I didn’t walk it all at once. I would be passed out in a ditch between here and Birmingham if I did. Some of these miles were earned on the treadmill at the gym in the mornings. Some of them were spent walking our dog (now dogs) around the neighborhood. Some of them were earned just living life. Earned by walking through the grocery store, around the house and around the Fairlane building. These 175 miles were earned one step at a time.
Little things like steps add up. A mile is walked one step at a time. A discipline is strengthened one day at a time. Our prayer relationship with God is strengthened one prayer at a time. Our study and meditation in the Word are strengthened each time we open the Bible. Our ability to serve and sacrifice for others is strengthened each time we choose to serve and sacrifice to make someone’s life easier. Our commitment to our church family is strengthened with each time we choose to worship and enjoy community with them. Our worship is strengthened as we open our hearts and minds to worship and focus upon our God.
As I contemplate the lives of those men and women who have helped me growth in my faith through their encouragement and example, I realize that their lives of faith were built one day at a time. They didn’t arrive where they were instantaneously. Instead, it was built one day at a time. It was built one decision at time. It was built with several steps forward, a few steps back and a commitment to move closer to their Father each day.
Small daily acts of love, kindness and commitment to God and to your neighbor add up. I’m reminded of the song “Sometime by Step” by Rich Mullins. We sing this song occasionally with the Fairlane family. A lyric in the chorus says, “And step by step, you’ll lead me, and I will follow you all of my days”. Step by step God leads us. Each day God leads us. Each hour God leads us. Each minute he leads us. As miles are walked, our lives with God are built step by step. And before you know it “all of our days” are spent walking with God.
Where are your steps leading you? Where your steps are leading you is where your life is headed. I pray they are headed towards the Father and those around you are being blessed as you walk with them each day. As the miles add up, step by step, I pray your faith continues to grow and strengthen step by step.
“Whoever says he abides in Christ ought to walk in the same way in which Christ walked.” 1 John 2:6
