Going where you’ve never been before can be a scary experience. I’ve been thinking about this fact as the school year begins. I remember Davidson going to school as a kindergartener. It was scary for him, and it was scary for us as his parents! Now, as Davidson begins his senior year it’s still a little scary as he prepares to finish his school years and enter the adult world in a year.
It can be scary when you accept a new job. You believe you’ve made the right decision accepting it, but you never know until you’ve actually done the job and worked with your co-workers until you know it’s a good fit. It’s scary when you walk into a doctor’s office because you haven’t been feeling quite right. It may be nothing or it could be something serious. It’s scary to await a diagnosis that you have never faced before. It can be scary when you move to a new city or a new community. Will you find friends? How will life be different there? It can be scary when you’ve never been somewhere or through something before.
“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
When we go into the unknown, we need to remember that our God is with us. Just as He went before Israel in the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land, God is with us in our journey. Whether we are going into a school, doctor’s office, a new community, or any other unfamiliar situation, we can be assured that God is going before us. We are never alone. He is preparing a path for us, and He will meet us along that path. It may not be the smoothest of paths and it may lead into places and situations that make us uncomfortable, but God is faithful in His presence. Wherever He leads us, He will be with us. He leads and we follow assured that He won’t abandon us as we enter into the scary places that we must go.
The unknown is often scary. The uncertain can be frightening. Yet, trust in what you do know and of which you are certain. God is good and He is faithful. His promises are true. He will always be with you. Even in the unknown and the uncertain and in the scary moments of the new, God is present. He has gone before you preparing the way. Trust in Him. Follow Him. You will discover blessing in the unknown and the uncertain.
