“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Psalm 139:13-14
We live in an age of comparison. Driven by social media, we can now see what our friends and neighbors are buying and enjoying. We see their vacation photos and the fun they have at concerts, parties and other social events. We see what appear to be perfect marriages and families enjoying life with few cares in the world.
As we view these images and posts, it’s tempting to compare ourselves to others. We dwell on what we don’t have and what we’re missing. We compare our marriages and find them lacking. We don’t seem to be having as much fun as other people. Our vacations don’t seem as grand. Our family seems more dysfunctional. We appear to be part of the “have nots” instead of the “haves”.
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” – Oscar Wilde
I saw this quote the other day as Misty and I were shopping in a home décor shop. There is much truth in this statement. There will only be one you. There will only be one person who will think your thoughts, perform your actions, have your unique set of friends and who will experience all that you will experience. There will only be one person created by God to live your life, to have your unique set of talents and abilities and to have the unique influence that only you will have. When the entire history of life on earth has been completed, and all is said and done, there will only have been one you upon this planet. No one will ever be you.
God designed you, He created you and He has placed you where and when you are for a reason. So, be the best you that you can be as you allow the Spirit to guide you. Be you in your marriage and use your gifts and talents to bless your spouse. Be you in your parenting and allow your kids to enjoy the love and care you have to offer. Be you with your friends and bless them with your personality and kindness to them. Be you in this church family and use your talents and gifting to encourage and bless this church family. Be you in this world and fulfill the plan that God has only given you to complete.
You are enough. You are a blessing. You are God’s unique, incredible creation. Be you.
