“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” – Romans 8:16-17
Misty and I are currently reading through the bible using The Bible Project app on our digital devices. The app combines daily readings with occasional videos that help explain the story of God as recorded in His word. It’s been a fun and enlightening way to read the Story again and gain some new insights.
As I’ve read through Genesis, I’ve noticed the importance of birthright. The firstborn receives the greatest blessing. This is evident in the story of Jacob and Esau. Esau was the firstborn and should have received the blessing of his birthright. As the firstborn, his birthright entitled him to receive the greatest blessing. Yet, in a moment of carelessness, he gave the birthright to his brother, Jacob, in exchange for a bowl of stew. He gave up the incredible blessing of the firstborn’s birthright for a temporary blessing of a full stomach. He forgot the truth that if you have the birthright, you receive the blessing.
I’m thankful that we have received the birthright and blessing because of Christ. In Galatians, Paul shares that we are children of God and therefore heirs of the Kingdom with Christ. God loves us and sent His son to die on the cross for us so that we might receive the birthright as children of God and receive the blessing of living a Christian life and the blessing of an eternity with God. The blessings of the birthright are experienced now and will be experienced throughout eternity. We have the birthright and the blessing.
Don’t give up the blessing of the birthright. God sent His son to die for you so you can be co- heirs with Christ. You have been born again as a child of God. The birthright is yours and the blessings that go with it. Don’t trade it for anything. Don’t trade it for the material things of this world that don’t last. Don’t trade it for financial success or the accolades of this world. Don’t trade it for a relationship with someone that doesn’t honor God. Don’t trade it for physical pleasure. Don’t trade it for anything. Hold onto it. Savor it. It’s the most precious gift that you will ever possess.
The birthright is yours and so is the blessing. It’s God’s gift to you. Thank God that He calls you His child and has given you the blessings of the birthright. It’s yours to enjoy now and throughout eternity. Enjoy the beauty and blessing of being a child of God.
