Recently, I spent part of a morning setting up chairs for an event in our fellowship hall. Most of the chairs are still in good shape. There are a few with some “wear and tear”. As I was bringing them out of the storage closet, I began to think of all the events for which they have been used. These chairs have been used for so much.
They have been used for church family fellowship meals. Some of them bear the stains of food and drink spilled during the midst of a church family meal. They have held people who have enjoyed sharing a meal with their church family. (Fairlane knows how to hold a great fellowship meal.) They have held our children who sit patiently while their parents finish eating. They’ve held our teens who have enjoyed laughing with their friends. They’ve held our church family as we enjoyed being together.
They’ve held us as we celebrated graduations each year. Fairlane has been blessed with wonderful, godly teens who have graduated and moved on to higher education and/or careers. These chairs have held us as celebrated with these graduates and their families and thanked God for His work in their lives.
These chairs have held us as we mourned loved ones at funeral dinners. They’ve held us as we shared memories of cherished loved ones who passed before us. They have felt our tears during these dinners and held us as lovingly prepared food from our church family comforted us.
These chairs have held us during Bible classes in the fellowship hall. God’s word has been taught as we sat on these chairs and engaged in Bible study together. They have held us as we read God’s word together, prayed together and grew in Christ together.
These chairs have held us as we worked on ministry projects together. Whether it was preparing supplies for the City of Children trip, helping with a coat drive, wrapping presents for our Angel Tree or the countless other ministry projects in which the Fairlane family has participated, these chairs have held us while God’s Kingdom work was done in our midst.
These chairs have held cherished Fairlane family members who have gone before us into eternity. Their legacy of commitment to God and our church family still blesses us to this day. We are blessed to have such fond memories of them that encourage and comfort us.
These chairs will be filled by future generations who will worship, fellowship and engage in ministry around these tables. They will lead the Kingdom work at Fairlane in the future and bless our community through their efforts. We should be praying for these future generations and the work God has designed for them to do.
These chairs have seen so much. These chairs will see so much. God has been and will be present and working through it all. Thank God for the faithful love and kindness He has shown the Fairlane family.
