It has been a strange season for sports fans. The NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball season concluded without a champion. There was no “March Madness”. The College World Series was cancelled. The NHL season went on hiatus and there is uncertainty whether it will be finished. The NBA season also went on hiatus and they continue to discuss whether the season can be completed. Even the National Spelling Bee was cancelled. There is no spelling champion for 2020. 2020 is apparently lacking in champions.
Unless, you turn to scripture. In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, we are reminded that there are conquerors or “champions” all around us. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) If you are a disciple of Christ, you are a champion. We are champions through the sacrifice and love of our Savior who was willing to die on the cross for us.
No event or circumstance in this life can defeat us and separate us from his love. We are a champion.
No person or spiritual being can defeat us and separate us from his love. We are a champion.
Death, itself, can’t separate us from his love. We are a champion.
We weren’t created to walk in defeat. We are victors because of Christ. In this season of strangeness and unknown, it is tempting to look at the negativity and the obstacles that have confronted us. It’s easy to give into depression and doubt and feel like we are being defeated. These temptations face us on an almost daily basis. These past three months have not been easy for anyone.
Don’t give in to these temptations and false voices. Remind yourself, that because of Christ, you are a champion. You are a conqueror. You are victorious.
Sports will one day resume. We will enjoy sitting in the stands and in front of our TVs and watching them again. Champions will be crowned. But their accomplishments pale in comparison to the victory that the sons and daughters of God have won.
We are champions. We have the ultimate victory as we await eternity with the father. Live like a champion. The victory is yours.
