Misty and I won’t ever write a book on parenting. It’s been a great blessing parenting Davidson for the past seventeen years (going on eighteen…gulp!) and it’s also been pretty challenging at times. I believe that we have done some things well and other things we could have done better. We’ve had successes and we’ve had setbacks and through it all God’s grace and care for Davidson and us has been more than abundant.
Parenting and leading a family closer to God and each other is a difficult task in today’s demanding world. Starting this morning, we are going to spend the next few weeks talking about creating and maintaining families that are “on the move”. They are on the move to a deeper relationship with the Father and they are on the move to having a deeper relationship with each other. We will talk about the most important discipling work that you will ever do in your life. We’ll talk about the foundation for this discipling. We will also talk about the example we set, the intentionality of parenting, using ordinary life events to point our children towards God and finding ways to celebrate God’s goodness to us.
These lessons will challenge us, but I also hope they encourage and inspire us. They won’t be given to make us feel guilty or to “beat us up” as we reflect upon our parenting. Instead, they will give us tools and insight into continuing to move our families closer to the heart of God where they are meant to be.
It’s summer, so many of us will be traveling, at times, over the next few weeks. If you are out of town, check out our livestream at www.fairlanechurch.org and watch us live or you can catch any of the lessons at a later date on our website. Invite your friends with children to come join us over the next few weeks. These lessons will be a great opportunity to invite them to hear lessons that will be relevant to their own journey as parents. Afterwards, talk about the lessons with them and discuss what was shared with them.
We all want our families to be on the move. We want them to be moving closer to God and we want them to be moving closer to each other. Join us this morning as we begin talking about how our families can be on the move!
