Waffle House is a hallmark of most large and small towns in the southern United States. Shelbyville has its own location on Main Street. It’s where you go for breakfast any time of the day. Play a song on the jukebox, drink some hot coffee and enjoy a meal. Morning, noon or night and even on all holidays, Waffle House is open.
While Waffle House obviously serves waffles, its main attraction, for many, is its hash browns. You can order them in a variety of ways. Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced and topped. You can have them with onions, cheese, tomatoes, chili and ham. You can have all of these ingredients or none of these ingredients. You can have a couple of these ingredients depending on what your taste buds are saying at the moment. Hash browns are available 24/7.
Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced and topped are varieties of Waffle House hash browns but they are also a good description of how our lives feel at times. Our schedules get busy and we feel scattered as we try to get everything done in our limited time. We feel smothered with the demands of work, home and other activities in which we are engaged. We are covered up with busyness, noise and activity and find it hard to find the quiet time we need. Sometimes we feel overlooked and chunked aside by those we respect and want to impress. We are diced by the harsh words and insults of family, friends, co-workers and even those we don’t even know. We feel topped by others who appear more successful, talented, and “together” than we ever believe we will.
It’s amazing how our life can resemble a Waffle House hash brown. Life is difficult. We will feel the stress and strain as we try to live the right way in our daily lives. Living for God in an ungodly culture isn’t easy. Trying to be a witness for Christ in today’s world is a challenge as we try to work, parent, worship, serve and just live the lives we feel God is calling us to live. A Waffle House hash brown order can aptly describe the current condition of our lives.
Breathe. Slow down. Find a place for quiet and peace in this hectic world. Spend some time in prayer. Invest in a period of meditation. Read God’s word. Seek out a Godly friend and invite them to coffee. (It’s worth the sacrifice of time.) Take a walk in nature. Listen to music that calms and encourages you. Find what fills your soul and brings you peace amid the chaos.
Life wasn’t meant to be lived like a Waffle House hash brown. God has more for you than this. Seek Him. Seek His gifts that nourish and fill you. Feel His rest and refreshment. Live the life He is calling you to live.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12)
