“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” – James 1:17
There’s a word that our family learned while we lived in southern Louisiana. It’s a word that is used fairly commonly down there. We first learned it when a waitress at a local restaurant gave us a free dessert. When we informed her that we hadn’t ordered it, she said “it’s lagniappe”. Puzzled, we asked her what that meant. She smiled and said “you’re not from here. Lagniappe means “something extra”. It’s a blessing freely given to make life a little better and a little sweeter.
I believe that God understands the concept of lagniappe. He continually gives us what we need. He provides us shelter to allow us to live comfortably. He provides food and water to nourish our bodies. He provides financial resources that allow us to pay our bills and provide for what we need. He has provided a building that our church family can worship in and resources that help us grow spiritually. God is faithful to provide what we need.
He does even more than this. This is where His “lagniappe” is evident. He provides blessings that makes our life better and sweeter. This past week, He blessed us with a snowfall that enhanced the beauty in His creation. Several families in our neighborhood, including ours, enjoyed playing in the snow and experiencing the joy of a fresh snowfall. God consistently showers His blessings upon us. The majority of us have kitchens with abundant food. We have clothes that not only provide cover but are fashionable and comfortable. We drive cars that do much more than get us from point A to point B. We have technology that connects us to family and friends throughout our country and even throughout the world. We live in a beautiful part of the country and regularly get to see the glory of God through His creation. Most of us have ample financial resources and don’t have to worry where our next meal is coming from or how we will pay our bills. God’s blessings have been abundant to us. We have received our lagniappe. We’ve received our “something extra” from God.
We take so much for granted. God has been so good to us. He not only provides what we need, but He blesses us with so much that is extra. Why? Why does He pour these blessings upon us? We are His children. We are His beloved family. He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die for us and this love continues as He provides for us and gives us more than we could ever deserve. His goodness and love are abundant. He is truly the God of “something extra”.
Enjoy the “lagniappe” of God. He is good to you and He loves to bless you with more. Thank God today for His love and for the “something extra” with which He fills your life.
