On May 26, 1990, I graduated from Mount Vernon High School in Fortville, Indiana. It’s hard to believe thirty-one years has passed since I received my diploma in that crowded high school gym. I had plans for my life. I was going to go to Lipscomb University. I was going to become a CPA. I was, hopefully, going to find a Christian wife who loved God and His Kingdom. I had so many plans and was so excited to get going. Life was going to be an adventure and I couldn’t wait to get started.
Thirty-one years later, I can say that life has been an adventure. I went to Lipscomb and earned a degree in Professional Accountancy and became a CPA. I met a woman, who has a deep love for God and His mission and who loves her family and friends very well. My son has been one of God’s greatest blessings to me and I’m thankful for his fun personality and fondness for all things technological. I’ve lived in six different cities, in three different states and have been blessed to travel to cities throughout the country to experience new cultures. I have close friends who love me and are there for me when needed and who I also support when they are in need. Life has been an adventure.
It hasn’t exactly been the adventure that I thought it would be. As an eighteen-year-old graduate, I never imagined that I would be a preaching minister. I grew up in the church, but preaching wasn’t on my radar. God had other ideas. I never dreamed that my wife would be from Florida and that I would live in Florida and Louisiana during my life. I never imagined that my family would expand to include church families in every city in which we have lived. Our lives have been blessed and changed by the kindness and compassion of so many wonderful disciples of Christ. It’s been a wild ride as my numerous gray hairs can attest, but it’s been a blessed ride and I’m thankful for it. Thirty-one years ago, I was ready for an adventure and I have lived a good one.
Through it all, God has been faithful. He has been faithful when I was not. He has loved me when I didn’t love well in return. He has been merciful when I didn’t deserve it and He has never missed a step during this adventure of life. I am thankful for His love and grace. He’s been the author of my story and the creator of my adventure. He has been more than good to me.
So, Kylee, Savannah, Hannah, Maddie, Kobi, Mary Alice, Joshua, Ruth, Anna and Laila your adventure is ready to begin. I know you have big plans and are excited to see what the future holds. I’m excited for you and can’t wait to see where your adventure takes you. Trust God. Rely upon Him and He will always lead you where you need to be.
Let the adventure begin! It’s going to be a blast!
