Lance’s Lines – Pop-up Showers (July 10 2022)

July 9, 2022 By Michael Rector Leave a Comment

“Pop-up showers” are those rain showers that occur sporadically especially when the heat and humidity are high. You never know when they are going to occur. They just “pop-up”. It can be sunny and all of sudden a cloud appears, drops its rain, and moves on leaving a steamy aftermath and everything outside being wet. There have been times that it’s raining at the Fairlane building and we didn’t get a drop of rain at home. Pop-up showers are part of our lives this time of year.

I don’t like pop-up showers. I have a personality that likes to plan things out. I’m not too big on surprises. I don’t mind sunny days where there is no chance of rain. I don’t mind rainy days where the sun doesn’t shine. I don’t like the days where it’s sunny and then rainy. Where it’s sunny one moment, raining the next, and then back to being sunny. It bothers me when I’m enjoying the sun and then it goes away for a burst of rain and then the sun returns to steam things up and make things sticky and humid. Pop-up showers aren’t well-received when you don’t like surprises.

Yet, pop-up showers resemble our lives. Our lives are full of surprises and unexpected happenings. Some of these surprises are great. We receive a promotion we weren’t expecting. We receive an unexpected check in the mail. We are blessed with the news of an unexpected pregnancy. A friend we haven’t seen for years shows up at our door. Surprises can bring us great blessings.

Some surprises bring us challenges. We receive a health diagnosis that we weren’t expecting. Our company decides it needs to layoff employees. Our A/C or car breaks down and we have an unexpected expense. A family member or friend dies unexpectedly and we are reminded of the fragility of life. Sometimes, surprises bring us grief and trial for which we weren’t prepared.

Life is full of “pop-up showers”. Things are going well and we are basking in the warmth of good times with friends and family and then a shower of struggle appears. It’s rain of pain and frustration overcome us. The skies grow cloudy and dark and we struggle to hold onto hope. It feels like the rain won’t ever end.

But bad times don’t last forever. The sun will return. We will see the light again. The rain will cease and we will feel God’s blessing upon us again. Smiles and joy return. Hope is renewed and we enjoy a shower of blessing and gratitude. We bask in the goodness of God.

Life is full of “pop-up showers”. Weather the rain and remember the sun will return. God is present even in the rain and He will walk you through it to experience His goodness and blessing again. Life is full of the unexpected but our Father is faithful and He will see us through. He is present in the good times and the bad and He will be with us in the “pop-up showers” of life.
