For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)
As I sit at my desk in the office, I face a couple of shelves of books. These books are filled with the accounts of the lives of Presidents and other notable figures from history and the impact they made upon this country and/or world. Some of these individuals had an incredibly positive impact on this nation. They were strong, courageous leaders and several of them had a firm belief in the guidance and providence of God. They were men of faith who relied upon God to direct their paths. Some of these individuals were not good leaders and some had a detrimental impact upon this country. They did not lead courageously, and some are known as much for what they didn’t do compared to what they did do. History does not remember them well. Each of these individuals lived interesting lives filled with challenges, joys, trials and triumphs. They each left a legacy. Some are appreciated while others are looked at with disappointment.
Each of us is living a life. It’s one, single, solitary life. This life is being built through an accumulation of days. Each day we live adds up. They build a life. It’s easy to go through the motions each day. It’s easy to wish today away while longing for the weekend, our next vacation, or some other event that hangs in the future. It’s easy to view each day as mundane and boring as we try to get through the day and into our beds at night. It’s easy to let the days slip by.
I want to encourage you not to give into these attitudes that come against us. Instead, greet each day as the unique gift it is. Each day won’t be easy and filled with happiness and excitement, but each day is still a gift given to you by God to do something positive with it. Each day is an opportunity to love well, act kindly, encourage someone, work hard and savor the moments we have been given. As I’ve read various biographies of men and women who have made a unique, positive impact upon this world, I’m reminded that their extraordinary lives were lived one day at a time. They were lived moment by moment. They were lived with the attitude that life is too precious to be wasted and the opportunities we have to better our world are too valuable to be wasted.
You have one life to live. Live it well. Live it with purpose. Live it to glorify God and point others to him. It’s an incredible gift you have been given. Your life is extraordinary. There will never be another like it. Embrace this gift and make a positive impact upon your world today.
