We have experienced some cloudy days recently in Bedford County. We experienced several cloudy days a couple of weeks ago as the ice and snow came down. Snow clouds rolled in and blocked the sun. Last weekend, we experienced substantial rain and winds. Clouds covered the weekend, and the sun was nowhere to be seen. We’ve experienced some cloudy days.
I’m writing these words on Wednesday morning, March 3 rd . As I look out of my office window, the sun is shining. The skies are blue and there is not a cloud in the sky. As I walked into the church building this morning, birds were chirping. Flowers are beginning to bloom. The clouds and dreariness are gone. The sun has returned.
Of course, we know that eventually the clouds will come back. That’s the nature of weather. We will have cloudy days. They will return. We will have days filled with rain, wind, and even ice and snow. It’s a reality of the life we live, and we expect it. Yet, we also know, the sun will return.
Our lives are like this in a spiritual and emotional sense as well. We have cloudy days. We have days filled with frustration and anger. We have days filled with doubt and questioning. We have days filled with grief and loss. We have days where things just don’t seem right. We can’t figure out why, but our spirits are unsettled, and we are upset. We have days filled with conflict and strife with those whom we love the most. We have days where sin rears its head in our lives, and we feel like a failure. We have cloudy days.
Yet, we also know that these days don’t last. Christ’s love and grace are ever present. We feel His comfort as we read His words of love and kindness in Scripture. A friend comes by or calls us and offers the words that we need to hear that encourage us and sustain us. We receive a text that reminds us that we are loved and thought of and we are blessed. We meet God in prayer
and feel His presence and are strengthened. We come to participate in worship and are fortified by the praise of God’s people, the words from Scripture, and our time around the table. Cloudy days don’t last forever.
And then the Son returns. One day, Christ will return, and all cloudy days will end. He will return and all storms upon this earth will cease. He will return and all spiritual and emotional storms will end. There will be no more anger, grief, confusion, pain and conflict. All will be at peace and we will back in the glory of the Son. There will be no cloudy days in eternity.
The Son will return. I am ready for that day.
