“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24
If you’re like me, you’ve spent a good portion of the past few months looking ahead. I’ve been longing for things to return to “normal”. I’m looking forward to college football starting and watching some SEC football. I’m looking forward to fall arriving and the cooler weather and the beauty and peacefulness of the falling leaves. I’m looking forward to the election being over and the ceasing of political ads and attacks. I’m looking forward to the holidays and time spent with family and friends no matter what that looks like this year. I’m looking forward to a vaccine being created and distributed in the hopes that it will allow us to experience a little more of the life we once enjoyed.
As you can see, I’m looking forward to a lot of things. You probably are as well. Today, as I was walking our new puppy, Hodie, it occurred to me that I’m looking forward to so many things that I’m forgetting to live for today. It was a beautiful, warm afternoon. The light has begun to turn just enough to let us know fall is on the way. There was a gentle breeze ruffling the leaves. I had just enjoyed teaching the Wednesday morning bible class and enjoying the fellowship of the ladies that were there. I’m healthy with a few minor aches and pains and able to enjoy a walk through the neighborhood. I’m blessed beyond measure with a great family, friends and a beautiful church family. Life is blessed. Life is good. It’s meant to be enjoyed today.
I don’t want to spend this season looking forward past the blessings I have today. Difficult seasons, like the one we are experiencing, can cause us to look forward and miss the blessings that surround us each day. I need to be reminded of the words written by the psalmist in Psalm 118. “THIS is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
This day has been made by God for me to rejoice and be glad in it. This day is a gift given to me by God. If I spend this day looking forward to a future day or a future season, I’m not enjoying the day that God has given me today. Each day is a precious gift. This day is the only day I have been guaranteed. I need to enjoy it and be thankful for it. Even in the midst of a pandemic and a season filled with uncertainty and stress, I can enjoy and be glad for this day, because God has given me this day. This day is my day to worship Him. This day is my day to love others. This day is my day to enjoy the beauty of His creation. This day is my day to be thankful for God’s blessings that are abundant in my life. This is the day in which to rejoice.
Future days may come, and they may bring blessings. I pray that they bring easier days and a sense of normalcy. I pray that they bring an end to the pandemic and a removal of masks and restrictions which we have had to endure. I hope they bring many things that I look forward to. I hope that I remember to rejoice and be glad in them as well.
But today, on this day, I will rejoice and be glad for this day. It’s a gift and a blessing from God. Don’t spend your life wishing for tomorrow. Enjoy today and see what God has prepared for you.
