It’s more than the fun and silly songs. It’s more than the creative crafts that are put together and painted. It’s more than the skits and fun characters that excite our kids. It’s more than the cookies and other treats that are consumed. It’s more than the fun games and time to run around with friends.
VBS is composed of all of those things, but it’s so much more.
VBS is a beautiful opportunity for our kids (and their friends) to hear the story of God’s love for them. In a world that often tells us what we can’t be and what’s wrong, VBS lets us kids know who they can be in Christ and the good things that this life holds. VBS brings to life those stories from God’s word that remind our kids of God’s love and plan for His people and His love and plans for our kids. VBS, in a uniquely creative way, gives our kids a chance to experience the love that our adults at Fairlane have for them as well, and helps build relationships and friendships that will continue to bring blessings in the years to come.
This year’s theme is “Champion”. In a world that often makes us feel defeated, our kids need to learn that they are triumphant through Christ. They need to know that they aren’t alone as they face the challenges of growing up in today’s culture. At this year’s VBS, they will learn about the importance of teamwork as they live the life of a disciple. They will learn the value of
selflessness and looking out for the needs of others. They will learn the importance of being devoted to those things and relationships that are good and holy. Finally, they will learn of the value of Godly leadership and the difference they can make in the lives of their friends through their influence upon them.
This Christian life isn’t always easy, but it’s a blessed life. I’m thankful that our kids will learn about the victory they have in Christ this week, and that they will be given insights and instruction on how to begin living a life that will help them overcome the challenges and difficulties they will face in this life. They need to know that they are a “champion” with God on their side.
I encourage you to bring the kids in your life to VBS this week. Bring your kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, and your children’s friends from school and the neighborhood. VBS is so much more than four nights of fun and play. (Even though it’s that as well.) VBS is a blessed opportunity for our kids to build their friendships with their friends and adults at Fairlane who be here to love and encourage them in the years ahead. It’s a chance for them to hear the stories of God’s love for them. It’s an opportunity for them to know they are never alone, and God is with them and for them.
They are a “champion” because their God has called them to overcome.
