Can you put a price tag on a life? How much is a life worth in dollars and cents?
That’s an intriguing question. How much is a life worth? Is the life of a CEO of a Fortune 500 company worth more than a blue-collar worker employed in a service industry? Is the life of a doctor worth more than the life of a mother or father who stays at home and parents their children? What is a life worth?
This isn’t always an abstract question. Kenneth Feinberg was tasked with answering this question as he served as the Special Master of the September 11 th Victim Compensation Fund. His responsibility was to determine how much each life was worth of those who tragically lost their lives twenty years ago on 9/11. He had to answer the question of how much a life was worth by placing a dollar value on each life lost. It was an incredibly daunting and challenging task. As you can imagine, it was a task that brought much criticism and second guessing. It’s incredibly difficult to place a dollar value on a life.
How much is your life worth?
God thinks that your life is incredibly valuable. He values your life so much that he sent Jesus to die for you. He allowed his only son to be crucified on a cross so your life would be redeemed and saved, and you would spend eternity with him.
God saw you and all of your sin. He saw you and all of your mess. He saw you and everything you’ve done and said that broke His commands. He has seen it all. Yet, his love for you is greater. He saw you dying in sin and offered his son to die in your place. Jesus temporarily bore our sins on the cross so our sins would be eternally forgiven. Your life is incredibly valuable to God.
How much is your life worth? It’s almost impossible to put a dollar value on a life with which everyone would agree. There are too many factors on which we may disagree. Yet, God places the same value on each life. His son was offered on the cross for everyone. Jesus died for each person born upon this earth. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done. It doesn’t matter what your financial status is. It doesn’t matter what your skin color or ethnicity are. Jesus died for you because God values your life more than you will ever know.
How much is your life worth? It’s worth everything to God.
