As the children filed into Vacation Bible School, their cries of joy and laughter filled the auditorium. There was an excitement each night as they anticipated the lessons, games, crafts and other fun that they would be experiencing. They looked forward to the skits that would take place involving the “Faith Force”. (The kids absolutely loved the T-Rex and the sloth!) They looked forward to having a good time while learning about the One in whom they should place their faith.
This year’s VBS theme was “Faith Force”. Through the timeless stories of Daniel, David, Micaiah (some of you need to look him up) and the four friends of the paralyzed man, we learned about faithfulness, courage, truthfulness and kindness. These essential qualities are often lacking in today’s culture. Instead, we live in a world filled with infidelity, cowardice, “fake news” and meanness. We were reminded of the difference these qualities made in the lives of these characters from the Bible and how they can still make a difference in our lives today. The lessons these stories teach are timeless and our kids and adults were blessed as we were reminded of their truths together.
It was such a joy to see the various generations at Fairlane come together. Of course, we had our children here, but we also had teens who came to serve and learn. We had young families bring their children and help teach and lead our groups each night. We had many of our “senior saints” who came to love and serve our children. They see the need to love and support the youth in our midst and I was encouraged as they invested their time and energy in serving and building relationships with them. All generations were represented at VBS and it was truly a beautiful sight to see.
It’s weeks like these that remind me what God can do with a church family who is invested in His word and invested in sharing it with our surrounding community and with our children. I’m reminded what God can do with a church family that wants to be together because we love and enjoy one another. I’m reminded of what God can do with a church family who cherishes its past but knows God has great things for us to do in the present and has greater plans for us in the future. I’m reminded what God can do as young and old come together to share their love, talents and time with each. I’m reminded that God can do great things through this family we love at Fairlane.
God is blessing the Fairlane family. He is working in our midst and our spirit is revived. I look forward to seeing what God can do and will do in our future days together as He continues to use us to bless Shelbyville and Bedford County in our mission together.
I’m thankful for our church family. I hope you are as well. I can’t wait to see what God will do next!
