In an article from desiringGod.org, it discusses how worshiping God together may be the single most important thing we do. It plays an irreplaceable role in our spiritual life. Our worship brings together God’s word, prayer, and fellowship, and makes for the greatest means of God’s ongoing grace in the Christian life. But thinking of worship as a means can be dangerous. True worship is fundamentally an experience of the heart, and not a means to anything else. So, it’s important to distinguish between what benefits might motivate us to be regular in worship, and what focus our minds and hearts should pursue in the moment.
According to Don Whitney, referenced in the same article, “There’s an element of worship and Christianity that cannot be experienced in private worship or by watching worship. There are some graces and blessings that God gives only in the ‘meeting together’ with other believers”.
Over the past several weeks, we have been making attempts to enhance our time of worship in song together. There are two components that help this effort. One is appreciating the hymns that have been passed down from generation to generation. And the second is accepting new songs that have been intentionally created over the last several years to give new language, melodies, and stories to the heart of the worshipper.
Here at Fairlane we have begun the “new song” phase of this by learning songs like “Cornerstone”, “Come to the Table”, and “In Christ Alone”. This month in particular, we are working on “Mighty to Save”. In upcoming months, we will be focusing on learning the following songs: “We Trust in the Name”, “Here I Am to Worship”, “Wonderful, Merciful Savior”, “Good, Good Father”, “How Deep the Father’s Love”, “10,000 Reasons”, and “King of My Heart”.
On the last Wednesday night of each month we have been hosting a singing night for all who want to join us. The intent of those singing nights is to work on the new songs referenced above in an attempt to enhance our Sunday morning worship together as we incorporate those songs. We encourage, edify, lift up, and love one another through our worshipping together. Your participation in our corporate times of worship is vital to not only your spiritual journey but the life of the church. Many of you have chosen to plug in and participate in that, and we are grateful.
