Fall Retreat 2019
Our Fall Retreat weekend will be here before you know it. The Early Registration Deadline is TODAY. Make sure to sign up to get the lower cost of $35.00 because after today it goes up to $50.00 through October 13th. Also remember that Parent/Legal Guardian Adult Chaperones are FREE and Non-Parent and College Chaperones are $15.00. This year we are combining with Chris Bobo and the Youth Group from Southside Church of Christ for our weekend together. As you saw last week, the theme is “The Gospel According to Pixar.” We will be watching various clips from Pixar films and making connections to the Gospel story of Jesus. It should be an awesome weekend and I hope that you can join us. Special thank you to Jason and Candy Freeman who have agreed to cook for our Retreat this year. We look forward to a weekend of good eating as well!
Bring Your Bible To School Day on October 3rd
Isn’t it awesome to know you’re not alone in sharing and reading God’s Word on Bring Your Bible to School Day? You will be joined by hundreds of thousands of students—and their families—who are celebrating freedom and faith on this day. Even if you are just one person in your school—it’s so encouraging to know that God’s love is strengthening you, nationwide prayers are going with you and more than half a million others are doing the same thing at their schools. Register your student online at bringyourbible.org. If you do register your student, please let me know through the Office because I’d like to make a phone call to each school Administrator first to make sure they understand what is being done and why.
Mark your calendar for October 16th
It is time for the FYM to get back into our rotation of going to El Mexico one night per quarter. On October 16th, we will not have Pump night, but instead invite all FYM students, friends, and families to join us for a time of food and fellowship at El Mexico. We will meet to eat at 5:30pm and attempt to get back to the building at 7:00pm for our church devotional, followed by Bible class. If we aren’t able to make it back in time, for whatever reason, I will share a devotional thought with the group that is there to make the best use of our time together. We have known this to be something positive on the FYM calendar and we hope it continues to be. So make plans to join us and bring a couple of friends with you. Our next trip to El Mexico will be, tentatively, on January 15th.
Wednesday Nights with the Fairlane Youth Ministry
We recently finished our “I Am Second” video and discussion series. We watched some challenging videos and some difficult lessons and discussions to work through, but we did it. Now, we look forward to diving into a new 6 week series entitled, “All In.”
The Gospel doesn’t cost anything, but it demands everything. It demands that we go “all in,” a term that simply means placing all that you have into God’s hands. Pushing it all in. See, many people are scared of or even opposed to commitment. The thinking is, “If I make a commitment, then I give up my freedom. I give up my control. I give up my individuality.” But there’s an alternative opinion that says it’s actually only when you make a commitment that you are free to find the kind of trust that makes for intimacy, that makes for relationship, or that makes for community. We actually find our identity when we make commitments. But sometimes, we get stuck in a “spiritual no man’s land,” for lack of a better phrase. We’re afraid that if we go all in that we might miss out on what this life has to offer. It’s not true. The only thing you’ll miss out on is everything God has to offer. And the good news is this: if you don’t hold out on God, God won’t hold out on you. In fact, God can’t hold out on you, it would go against everything that He is. The commitment that should drive all others, is our commitment to God.
