Luke 15: 28-32 tells us that, “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him! My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” This passage tells finishes the parable of the lost son and how upset the “good” son was at his father for celebrating the return of the “bad” son, the older son was comparing himself to his younger brother and that comparing game interfered with him seeing the blessing of all that was unfolding in front of him. We just finished a four-part series with the youth on Sunday morning and the last topic was “quitting the comparing game”. The goal was to help them see that when we compare ourselves to others we are missing out on the fact that God made us who we are for a specific reason and he has a plan for us. We are all reminded in this passage that when we compare our situation in life to others around us we should remember God has a plan and a blessing for us as well, we just have to be patient and prayerful trusting God’s time is perfect!
